How do you fit a game that was built for the PS4 into your pocket?

“Night in the Woods” was a huge hit, and received particular praise for its visuals. Trying to fit the game into a much more tightly constrained platform - both in terms of memory, processing ability, and input - required significant work. In this talk, we’ll discuss both the technical and human changes that needed to be made to the game in order to make it fit the iOS platform.

In particular, we’ll discuss the techniques developed to compress frankly enormous number of sprites into the available memory, how we adapted each of the dozen-or-so different types of interactions in the game to touch screens, and how we stayed on top of the game’s content through the development of lots of custom tools.
